Bhanu Mistry CookingResidents of Sandwell experienced the sights, smells and tastes of Gujarat, thanks to Bhanu Mistry who gave a very engaging cooking demonstration at Salop Drive market garden.  Salop drive market garden is renowned for its work in the community, providing a vegetable box scheme and a wide range of activities for local residents.

In an earlier session, many of the participants had already been shown how to grow many of the less well known crops, now it was time to see how to cook some more unusual dishes. This included potato curry, spinach curry, chapattis and raita. The audience were not allowed to just sit back and observe and it wasnt long before they found themselves up at the front competing against their colleagues to see who could roll the best chapatti.

Many of the more unusual crops were growing in the tunnels next door: karella, dudi, turia and calaloo were all competing for space in a small section of urban jungle. Next year they will add a few more to the
list, as they seemed keen to try out a few of the Sowing New Seeds collection.

We will look forward to seeing how they grow.

The Sowing New Seeds Project is funded by the Big Lottery Local Food Fund and managed by Garden Organic. It aims to capture, preserve and disseminate the skills for growing non-traditional crops amongst growers in the Midlands. For more information see http://www.sowingnewseeds.org.uk
